After suffering division for nearly 30 years, Berlin was finally reunited in 1989 and is now the democratic capital of Germany. While the former East and West Berlins continue to grow together as one city, there are obvious differences between the two. The historic eastern part of town boasts renovated grand avenues, monumental architecture, and world-renowned museum treasures, while the western part of town has built entirely new museums, monuments, and cultural centers.

While the Wall and the reunification are certainly enough to draw many visitors, Berlin offers many other attractions, as well. Visitors also enjoy an ever-growing selection of wonderful restaurants, as well as cabarets, jazz clubs, and live theater. Areas Within the Destination

Charlottenburg: This is one of the wealthiest and most densely commercialized districts in western Berlin. It?s home to the Charlottenburg Palace and Savignyplatz, a tree-lined square with many bars, shops, and restaurants.

Kreuzberg: Traditionally the poorest and most overcrowded district in western Berlin, this area is now the unofficial headquarters of the city?s artistic counterculture.

Tiergarten: Translated to mean "Animal Garden," western Berlin?s Tiergarten has the Brandenburg Gate, the German Reichstag (Parliament), the Berlin Zoo, and some of the city?s best museums.

Mitte: This eastern Berlin district is famous for many reasons, including the Unter den Linden boulevard, the Pariser Platz district (the monumental square next to the Brandenburg Gate), Potsdamer Platz (the former no-man?s land where the Wall stood) and Alexanderplatz (the former centerpiece of the East German government).
