vacation destination for several reasons: it's surrounded by
ruins
like Monte Alban and Mitla, it's a city full of the flavor of
Mexico
that most tourists can only hope to experience, and it is a
large
clean city with plenty of great places to shop. The Oaxaca valley
has been inhabited for more than 3000 years.
The
ruins at San Jose Mogote (now just a collection of mounds),
just a few kilometers north of Oaxaca dates back over a thousand
years BC. The
height of civilization in the area, however, can be seen at
the ruins of Monte Alban which overlooks the Oaxaca Valley.
Monte Alban seems to have been the dominant city in the area
from around 450 BC to 700 AD. By that time the city of Monte
Alban was deserted and the cities of Mitla and Yagul seem to
be the only cities in the Oaxaca valley to continue growing.
